Is It Really Time To Start Wearing Neon Again?

Few fashion trends evoke nostalgia quite like neon, instantly transporting you to a specific time and place. As a '90s kid, fluorescent hues bring back memories of stacks of plastic bangles from Claire’s, questionable hosiery choices, rubbery spiked earrings, and two-tone piped Topman polos. And if we're talking school desks, I'm reminded of saccharine-scented, fluoro gel pens and Stabilo highlighters. Older generations, on the other hand, might link neon with the '80s, particularly Jane Fonda's iconic workout videos featuring colorful, waist-cinching leotards and leg warmers.

Fast-forward to the 2020s, and neon is still alive and well. It's everywhere, especially in hair dye bottles. Billie Eilish has become known for her lime-tinged roots, while Addison Rae rocked a retina-searing pink rinse in her "Headphones On" music video. Neon shades have also made their way into the crowds on the Fontaines D.C. tour, with fans inspired by the group’s fluoro-branded Romance album.
